Party Update: Candidate Applications for 2018 Elections
CANDIDATE APPLICATIONS FOR 2018 ELECTIONS
09 January 2017
The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) General Secretary Adi Litia Qionibaravi confirmed today that the Party is slowly preparing for the 2018 general elections.
The Party’s Management Board at its meeting on October 25, 2016, endorsed the proposal by the Party Leader, Major General (retired) Rabuka, that preparations for 2018 be pursued by the party, including the call for interested persons to apply to be SODELPA candidates. The Board also endorsed the proposal for the party to explore ways to cooperate and work with other parties, this is being pursued by the Party Leader who is in discussions with other political parties.
The Management Board agreed that the party’s candidates will be announced in April 2017. This will give the candidates about eleven months to campaign before the scheduled elections in March 2018.
The party therefore advertised on 1 December 2016 calling on interested persons to express their interest in being a candidate for the party in the 2018 elections. So far we have received 100 expressions of interest. The party is considering extending the deadline and this will be decided by the Party’s Working Committee and we will make the announcement once the decision has been made. In the meantime, we urge those who wish to stand for election, to send in their expressions of interest to the party office.
Who has applied?
At this point in time, the process is confidential, the party is still receiving applications, and we cannot confirm the names of those who have applied. It would be unfair to them and to other applicants, and may prejudice the selection process. Therefore, the party will not name those who have applied.
HOPE and other proposed political partiesResponding to questions about the proposed HOPE Party, Adi Litia said “We have noted the announcement by the Elections Office published in the Fiji Sun last week about the five proposed political parties. We have no specific comment on the proposed HOPE party as well as the other five groups vying to register their political party names.”
